How Do You Say That?

On the one-year anniversary of their podcast, I jumped on for a chat with Mark Ryes and Samantha Boffin.

"Bring a script and an interesting fact about you!" they said. So I did, and you can hear them both during the episode, as we play around and look at how what changing different aspects of the performance brings to the resulting voiceover.

We had a lot of fun, so take a listen and hear us talk about creating characters for inanimate objects, the nature of wildlife documentary voicing and how it can be used in other areas – and nipples!

The Narrator’s Cup of Joe

Daniela Acitelli is the host of the "Narrators Cup of Joe" on YouTube, and she has all the best narrators on her show. I'd been hoping for some time that she'd invite me on to chat… and then she did!

It's a conversation that covers my work, my transition to audiobooks, my transatlantic move, how Marc and I ended up running a farm, and a little about my philosophy on life. (Which sounds very grand, but it's not…)

The Voiceover Hour Podcast

My colleague, Rachael Naylor, asked me to join her on The Voiceover Network’s podcast. Click to hear our discussion on the coming of AI, a little about my career, and my thoughts on how to beat the robots…

BBC Radio WM

I started my broadcasting career back in 1989, at BBC Radio WM in Birmingham, England. Thirty-four years later, they invited me back on the air to talk to the lovely Kath Stanczyszyn for a nice little "local boy makes good" piece, which was broadcast on her morning show in May 2023 - but you can listen here by clicking the play button. (And Kath's surname is pronounced "stan-CHESH-in", in case you're as baffled as I was when I first it!)

The Washington Post

As the “Rise of the Robots” began in early 2023 (by which I mean the arrival of A.I. voices under dubious circumstances from unscrupulous developers…) I contributed to an article for The Washington Post, along with my colleagues, Remie Michelle Clarke and Bev Standing - who’s also one of my Callbox Girls!

Pranshu Verma’s article is called Their voices are their livelihood. Now AI could take it away (and unfortunately, it may be behind a paywall if you’re not a subscriber…)

Bloomberg

…and on the same subject of A.I., Margi Murphy got in touch with me for her article:
Voice Actors ‘Shocked’ to Find AI Copying Their Speech, Tone.

Here & Now (WBUR/NPR)

I was also invited onto NPR’s daily lunchtime show “Here & Now” to talk to Scott Tong about my experience of having my voiced cloned by a client for use in AI without my knowledge. You can listen to the interview here.

The Guardian

Barbara Speed invited me to contribute my thoughts for her article entitled Struck dumb: why ‘the voice of God’ got booted out of documentaries.

Once, no serious documentary could be without its authoritative voiceover in perfect English. But film-makers are now rejecting the whole idea. Are social media and post-truth politics to blame?

Mike Lenz Voice: A Journey Into Voice Acting

My colleague and friend, Mike Lenz, asked me to join him on his regular podcast about voice acting. Listen to the episode to hear us talk about the voiceover business, things I wish someone had told me when I was getting started, and life outside the booth.

The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast

I’ve narrated both of Matt Jardine’s books, the first of which was “How to be a Buddhist Millionaire”. Rather than being about money in the bank, being a Buddhist Millionaire is very much about your mindset.

Listen to our podcast episode to learn about finding a work-life balance and cultivating an attitude of abundance.

Tales from the Tannoy

My old friend Elinor Hamilton’s award-winning podcast “Tales from the Tannoy” focuses on the hidden lives behind the voices we hear around us all day.

We covered a lot of ground when we chatted, but she called this episode “Goats and Gay Bars”, which does seem to cover the bases…

Production Expert

During the COVID pandemic the demand for voice talent to record at home grew like never before. So, the team at Production Expert asked to take a peek inside my home studio to “What You Need To Create A Voiceover Studio”. (You’ll find a more up-to-date version of this on my Studio page here on my site.)

The Pro Audio Suite Podcast

I joined Andrew Peters on the Pro Audio Suite Podcast back in 2017 to talk about my career and my move to North Carolina from London. Andrew’s a British expat himself and has been in Australia for decades, but we both lived in the same town in Hertfordshire in the dim and distant past. So, tune in for memories of life in Hemel Hempstead too…
